"John is the tallest ___ all my friends" (AMONG or OF?)

I received a grammar question in one of the comments. The verbatim comment is below:

Actually this is one of the frequently asked questions (FAQs) about English grammar whose answer can be found on the Internet. Below are some questions and answers on the same grammar point that I've  just found:

Question
"Marvin is the tallest among/of all." Do both among and of fit in the above? Thanks.
Answer
If you really want to know the truth, search at Google
on the BBC and the New York sites. You can do that by searching for:
site:bbc.co.uk "tallest of all"
(everything in the above must go into the Search box, in order to identify the site searched)
site:bbc.co.uk "tallest among all"
site:bbc.co.uk "tallest amongst all"
site:nytimes.com "tallest of all"
site:nytimes.com "tallest among all"
http://www.englishforums.com/English/MarvinTallestAmong/zxpmr/post.htm

Now, here is my answer: both are acceptable. Following are a few examples with "among", taken from Google:

The best among us will learn from the mistakes of the past, while the rest of us are doomed to repeat them.
Who is the tallest member among B.A.P members?
Sinbad is the tallest among all the brothers.

Hơn nữa, theo chừng mực tôi biết, các sách văn phạm đều dạy 'the tallest of all'.

Xin có vài ý kiến chân thành gửi đến cô và các bạn đọc

-Tần số sử dụng: "tallest of all" nổi bật lên với tỉ lệ gấp 15 lần so với "tallest among all".

-Uy tín của người sử dụng: "tallest of all" được các tên tuổi lớn sử dụng, như BBC, Guardian, Independent, Dailymail và Newyork Times. Trong khi "tallest among all" chỉ được sử dụng bởi các website nhỏ, không mấy người biết hay các forum và blogspots.

Tôi xem lại một số sách văn phạm của Cambridge, họ đều dạy "the tallest of all".

John is the tallest of all his friends.
John is the tallest among (or amongst) all of his friends.
From my perspective both sentences are correct the latter tends to be more formal.
    Best,
    Matthew

  5. Còn đây là ý kiến của Dr Ryan Cook, hiện ở tpHCM (Email: dr_streator@hotmail.com):
Sure, you aren't required to use 'of'. To me it doesn't seem very common to use among with superlative form, but it is definitely okay and sometimes people do that. You can search for simple superlatives + among in Google and you start to get an idea of how this works. I hope that helps.
    Have a good weekend!
    Ryan

I've had a look at a the Cambridge International Corpus of English, which includes over a billion words of text. There are 1221 examples of 'the oldest of' and only 8 examples of 'the oldest among', so it suggests that 'of' is by far the most likely preposition to be used here. However, I doubt that any misunderstanding would be caused by using 'among' instead, so this is one of the many areas of English grammar where it is hard to say definitely that there is a simple, 'correct' answer.

I think I would tell my students that 'of' is correct, although they might come across 'among' instead. However, to many people 'among' would sound odd, and some people would consider it to be incorrect.

    Hope this is of help.
    All the best,
    Martin

  7. Ủa, chính Mr Martin Hewings cũng cho biết là có tới "8 examples of THE OLDEST AMONG" trong cái "Cambridge International Corpus of English" của ông ấy rồi thì còn gì nữa để thắc mắc là được hay không được dùng AMONG???

  8. Trích đề thi TOEFL AUGUST-2003, phần Written Expression, câu hỏi #16:

The constitution of New Hampshire, a second oldest among those of the fifty states, was adopted in 1784.

    Những chữ được underlined là
    A. "a" (second)
    B. "oldest"
    C. "among"
    và D. "was" (adopted)

Đáp án là "A": "the (second)" chứ không phải "a (second)"
Còn "C" (among) thì all right!
